Chad Schmidt Excavating
Chad says his John Deere 333G is really handy for working around garages and small work sites.

From Basements to Bunkers

Chad Schmidt Excavating, LLC in Merrill, Wisconsin is a 10-year-old construction company that is the namesake of its owner, Chad Schmidt. The 43-year-old contractor got his start building houses and working for another area excavation contractor. He incorporated the business in 2005 with just a truck, trailer, and John Deere 710D Backhoe.

The 710D is still in Chad’s equipment fleet. But now he also relies on a 160D Excavator, 700H and 850B Dozers, 624J Wheel Loader, and the most recent addition – a 333G Compact Track Loader. Chad, along with employees Paul Buck and Todd Luedtke, use this John Deere machinery to perform jobs in their three main customer segments: township, agricultural, and residential.

The township work involves ditching, culverts, and gravel while the residential work is primarily basement digging, landscaping, and land clearing. The business is located in a big dairy area of the state and Chad works with three of the four large dairy farms in Southern Lincoln County. They provide ag work, such as building bunkers, opening and closing manure pits, and site prep for farm structures. Chad is essentially on call 24-7 for emergency situations at these three farms. “Cows have to get fed and milked on time,” Chad stresses.

Whether hauling the 160D for ditching and town work, doing mass dirt moving or finish grading with the dozers, or working around foundations with the 333G, Chad depends on his McCoy Construction & Forestry sales representative, Randy Klug, to keep him moving. And the two find it pretty easy to stay in touch. They attended high school together, are current neighbors, and have kids who spend time together, too. Having a new McCoy store right in Merrill is also a big plus for Chad.

When he’s not working, Chad often “works” some more by donating time and equipment to help local organizations. He also enjoys participating in tractor pulls and spending time with his wife, son, and two daughters.
