Tyler Crow (left), owner of Tyler’s Backhoe Service, and operator, Ryan Gendron, like the challenges of the new logging operation.

Starting from the ground and looking up.

Tyler Crow was born to work in the dirt. At age 10, he began operating a skid steer for a local contractor and quickly realized that being behind a machine was his calling. From those skid steer beginnings he started Tyler’s Backhoe Service in Walker, Minnesota, in 2002 and has since expanded and updated his equipment to support the growing demand for his services.

Crow doesn’t discriminate when it comes to hard work. His company provides services from harbor work on Leech Lake to pole building sites. Logging got into his blood one winter when his excavating business began to slow. He took a job hauling logs for a local logger and realized that not only did he love playing in the dirt, he enjoyed being in the woods as well.

Crow has his eye on the expansion of his logging and forestry management business and sees cut-to-length logging as one way to do that. Cut-to-length logging is being used by many of his customers and is the style he favors because it doesn’t require large landings or leave large slash piles. This results in a cleaner finished product, not to mention better sorting and storage of wood varieties. Because the wood is carried off the ground, the possibility of breakage and dirt contamination is much less than with full-tree methods of logging. Cut-to-length results in a cleaner, quality job and that is Crow’s focus.

With an eye toward logging growth, Crow purchased a John Deere 703JH Harvester and a 1010E Forwarder. “It was a big decision,” Tyler said, “but I like a challenge and I’m happy I did it.”

His current fleet of equipment includes a John Deere 650JLGP, 624K, 135C, and that 703JH and 1010E. “I like everything about John Deere equipment,” Crow said. “And I like the fact that the guys at McCoy Construction & Forestry are easy to deal with; we all work together well.”
